“Harris Briggs (1988), the person behind the guise, greeted the dance music scene from Lubbock, Texas with his debut single ‘Hide Away’ released on Armada’s S107 Recordings label in early 2009. This song received plays from the top DJs in the scene, including Above & Beyond, Tiësto, Ferry Corsten, and Armin van Buuren to name a few. In late 2009, Above & Beyond made their own personal edit, and it has become a favorite during their recent gigs. Here’s an introduction for a DJ that rarely needs one. Long a leading force in the Canadian scene, Deko-ze has been cited as one of Toronto’s best by Eye Weekly, Fab, Now Magazine, Xtra, and the Toronto DJ Festival.

For years he has been labeled “Canada’s hardest working DJ”, frequently playing gigs in nearly every Canadian centre – big and small. He has held residencies in clubs across the country for over 15 years.

Building on his international profile, Deko-ze has numerous gigs in the USA, UK, Germany, Taiwan and Mexico under his belt. He was also signed to a multi-year artist / development deal with Hi-Bias Records in 2006. So far, he has three singles (“This Time”, “Feel Love” and “Explosive”), two remixes (for Sherrie Lea and Nick Fiorucci respectively) and two highly successful compilations (“Delicious” from 2006 and “Canada’s Finest: House” from 2008) under his belt. Plus, “Canada’s Finest: House” was awarded Best Local Dance Album by FAB Magazine!

Deko-ze has always believed in spreading the vibe – which was most evident throughout the “Techno Prisoners” and “Technopolis” shows he co-produced for several years; being an active member of the prestigious Balance Record Pool as well as the Music2Mix promo release pool based in London UK, Total Promo Service and ZipDJ based in Toronto; his long running, inciteful, hilarious and scandalous “Fiends, Mischief & Mayhem” column that ran in TRIBE and Scenester magazine and also as a buyer at Toronto’s Release Records and Eastern Bloc!

In a scene now overly segmented, Deko-ze is increasingly distinctive. Although categorized as a House DJ, he is recognized for his ability to fuse music of multiple genres (deep, funky and hard house; tribal; progressive; electro; tech-trance; techno). His energetic and charismatic stage presence, engaging personality, strong technical skills, and original approach to programming have uniquely cultivated a huge following in both the gay and straight scenes. Tsutomu Katoh Passes

Korg’s founder and Chairman Tsutomu Katoh passed away this last Tuesday after a long fight with cancer. DJs and producers alike may have been familiar with Korg’s famous Kaoss pads and mixers, as well as synthesizers such as the microKorg, controllers and plugins for computers, and more recently iPad apps. The official statement:

“Korg company founder and Chairman Tsutomu Katoh passed away Tuesday morning in Japan, after a long fight with cancer.

President Seiki Kato noted in a statement, “Since he founded Korg Inc. in 1963, Mr. Katoh has led our company with great talent, vision and leadership. He was loved and respected by all the employees and Korg family members, and he made a huge contribution to the lives of countless musicians around the world.”

Korg USA President Joseph Castronovo stated, “Chairman Katoh was a true visionary and a personal friend, and he will be missed by everyone at Korg and indeed, the entire music industry. Over the past twenty years, I have witnessed firsthand the ways in which Korg has flourished under his and his family’s guidance and leadership. His passion and professional goals were one and the same: to provide innovative tools for musicians to help them grow their craft. And those goals remained the same throughout his life and career. He will be deeply missed.”

A funeral service will be held March 24 in Japan.”

Faithless Calls it a Day

Another bit of sad news, Maxi Jazz announced yesterday in a post on their website that Faithless would split up after over 15 years of international stardom and 6 albums.

Some of the group’s most successful tracks include ‘Insomnia’, ‘God is a DJ’, ‘We Come One’, and the recent ‘Music Matters’ with guest vocalist. Cassandra Fox.

It is unclear if Maxi Jazz, Rollo or Sister Bliss will move on to other musical project.

The band will perform for the last time at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on April 8.
